myYam

Getting started

From nowt to "Ey up!"

myYam needs a Home Assistant hub at home. Once the hub knows your devices, myYam shows them all. Allow an evening for the hub; the app takes five minutes.

Just want a look? When you first open myYam, tap Try the demo house. It opens a made-up home with rooms, zones, cameras, heating and laundry, all working, with no hub needed. Leave it from Settings › Home Assistant when you're ready to connect your own.

What you need

Want every click? The detailed setup guide walks through running Home Assistant on a Mac (VMware Fusion) or Windows PC (VirtualBox), adding Bosch, Siemens and Neff appliances through Home Connect, using myYam away from home, and moving to a Home Assistant Green later.

Step by step

  1. Set up Home Assistant

The simplest way is a Home Assistant Green: plug it into power and your router and open homeassistant.local on a computer. You can also run Home Assistant in a virtual machine on a Mac or a Windows PC: see our Mac steps or Windows steps.

Create your user, and when it asks where home is, drag the pin onto your house. Who's home and the weather depend on it.

  2. Add your devices

In Home Assistant, go to Settings › Devices & services › Add integration and add each brand: Philips Hue, Ring, Bosch Home Connect (step by step), LG ThinQ, Apple TV, HomePod, PlayStation and anything else you have. Give each device an area (Kitchen, Snug, Landing…): areas become myYam's rooms.

  3. Make your zones (optional)

To switch lights across rooms, make light groups: Settings › Devices & services › Helpers › Create helper › Group › Light group. Call them "Upstairs Lights", "Downstairs Lights", "Outside Lights" or "House Lights" and they show in myYam as Upstairs, Downstairs, Outside and House.

  4. Add everyone in the house

Give each person their own Home Assistant user. For Who's home, each person installs the Home Assistant app on their phone, signs in, and allows location. Then in Settings › People, open the person and add their phone under Track device.

  5. Install myYam

Install myYam on your iPhone and iPad. It’s coming soon: email info@myyam.app to hear when it’s ready.

  6. Sign in

Open myYam on your home Wi-Fi. It finds the hub by itself. Tap Sign in with Home Assistant and use your own Home Assistant username and password on its sign-in page. You stay signed in, and your device appears in your Home Assistant profile, where you can sign it out.

  7. Make it yours

Pick a look in Settings › Look, choose which cards show on Home, add your news, and choose your picture in Settings › People. Try "Hey Siri, My Yam, turn off the lights".

Using myYam away from home

At home, myYam talks to your hub over Wi-Fi. To use it when you're out, turn on Home Assistant Cloud (a paid subscription from Nabu Casa, the company behind Home Assistant, with a free trial):

  1. In Home Assistant: Settings › Home Assistant Cloud, start the trial, and sign in.
  2. Under Remote Control, make sure it's on and copy the address, which looks like https://…ui.nabu.casa.
  3. If you signed in to myYam with Home Assistant, the away address is usually picked up by itself. If not: in myYam, Settings › Home Assistant › Add away address, paste it and tap Save.

myYam then switches between home and away by itself, and so do Siri and the widgets.

The hub has to be on for myYam to work, at home or away. If it runs on a computer, that computer must stay awake.
